sonny, come and gone

it was pretty amazing to see sonny on friday walking in the gym to re-join the game.  he volunteered that he felt very much out of shape.  maybe, but i'm sure we can all pull together and help him overcome that.

of course, it'll have to be next week since this week he's got a holiday to enjoy.  he called it "recover time."  he'll be back next week.  i suppose he didn't want us to think we scared him after his return.

the jerseys are still mia.  bring a light and dark just in case you need to switch.  and try to avoid heather gray.  that one throws everyone off.

coming tomorrow to a gym near you

two goals.

ten men.

one circle.

tomorrow, two teams will meet at that circle and decide the fate of the world.

action...

adventure...

...the power struggle to see who will dominate game and become victorious.

not friday and not monday

unless you hear otherwise, tomorrow morning is out and so is monday.  there is still going to be a set up set up for a lunch on monday.  keep checking back, but we might not have a place at the wp on monday.

Tuesday, November 28, 2006

like there's no tomorrow...

i am getting ready for bed and posting this up later than i wanted.  i'll see you guys in the mañana for our midweek hoops set.  and prepare to give it up since we probably will not play on friday.

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

friday is go

rob e rob sez that we can do a bit of moving and get the gym cleared for us and back for them in a short amount of time.  so, we'll continue with plans to play.

if something changes, check the site for the latest.  if you don't see anything else, then assume the best.

pre-holiday games

wednesday is the before game set.  play the games while you still can move and are unaffected by turkey and cranberries.  and plan to play hard.  i don't know about you guys, but dragging myself up and down the court after good mealz is not quite as easy as it is when i'm unloaded.

i put an email to sonny inquiring about the jerseys and good balls.  i don't know if he'll know anything but at least the feelers are out.  a suggestion:  pack a light and dark in your car (or a reversable).  that way, we can be ready to have the team predestined (unless you come from cedar springs).

assuming

i assume you had a good turnout friday.  i'll plan to see you guys in the morning, if it doesn't snow.  ha!

the hand

just when i thought drew was a personal nemesis, he proved himself to be the nemesis of all equally putting his hand in front of everyone's shot or pass, blocking it all.  and as dennis started calling him, drew is now officially known as "the hand."  (there's a far side comic that i need post later.)

games are on tomorrow.  i will not be there but made the attempt to recruit mc (mike cho) as my substitute.  it will be good to let mc meet "the hand."  i fear to think that no one is safe with him around.

our basketball has just gotten a bit more complicated.

oh, you guys might want to discuss how many we will have next week, specifically on friday morning.  it's the annual turkey-work-off  edition of our sport.  but we'll need enough for that to really work.

Sunday, November 12, 2006

lookin' for eight

past couple of times we've played, it's been seven.  i like the ol' four on three when i'm on three and have a good dose of red bull.  but four on four would be a lot more fun for all peeps.  so, if you didn't come last week, you might be that eighth (the chosen) one who will bring balance to the teams.

speaking of last week, i found that i have a nemisis in drew.  that boy slapped too many of my shots down like a perps pulled over by the lapd.  he's taken personally all those taunts i used to utter to his father.  i am definitely going to have to step up next time we face off.

see you in the morning.

still alive in the world

you are probably wondering, "will we play tomorrow morning? is round ball still being played around the world? has mock dropped the ball?"  well, i might have dropped the ball for an explicit wednesday announcement, but we did play.

games were on with ol' three versus four full court slam.  mono mike was back not missing much of a beat, and paired with pirate dave and my self (who was also donned in little pirate garb), we gave the rest their money's worth (i think).

oddly, the missing nigerian was, well, missing again as was drew.  we can't always be honored with the presence of aaron "please shove me" sherrill, but in his absence i had to resort to shoving bogie a few times.

round ball is indeed being played around the world, and more importantly, tomorrow morning.  be there or be square.

Sunday, November 5, 2006

remember: no hoops on monday

we don't play tomorrow.  stay a home.  rest up for wednesday.  i expect there to be many eager players wanting to run the court on midweek's day.

get your friday fix

word on the street (from elaine) is that monday hoops are out for the senior luncheon. that means only two days next week. come friday and give it all you got cuz you get monday to let it heal.

remember also that we are going to be down two peeps. do the math: nine from today...wait, let make this a word problem. if twenty-one people are on the distribution list and two of those addresses are duplicates to the same person and we haven't seen three of those people in almost ever and two come very rarely and two come every so often and two are out of town and one has mono, how many people will we need to make at least a good eight to play some good hoops?

if you are having trouble getting the answer, find someone who is good with math and plays hoops and have him help you with the answer...and come on friday...because we'll probably need him.

fifteen!

we had fifteen on monday!  most we've had in a long time.  and this crew came from another place.  it was good to see moby again.  the games were hard on the bod and good for exercise.  will we have a big number tomorrow?  we'll see.

best i know at this point is that we will have hoops on wednesday.  i don't believe the gym would be in any disarray, but we might should check it before we leave trunk-o-treat tonight.  speaking of that, i'll be operating in spot 71.  swing by if you need surgery.  :)

Sunday, October 29, 2006

perhaps

i don't know if we'll have full or half court tomorrow morning.  i swung by on the way home and checked and found the gym to be clear and ready for some full court.  but the senior citizen lunch is tomorrow, so perhaps after i left someone came in and set up.  that would mean possibly half court.

i believe we'll be able to play something.  my hunch.

i'm on-call and tonight is my last night.  i don't believe i'll be called; but if i am, it will mean i might not make it tomorrow morning.

more smack talk

well, it appears as drew the freshman has resorted to his smack talk again.  i almost tripped over the gauntlet as i left my cube earlier.  he said, "come and see."  i think this warrants some popcorn for the cool show we're in for on friday.  bring your cameras, playerz!

see you at the gym!

ps:  i haven't looked up the rule set for backcourt violations.  i have nothing to report as yet.

many happy returns

monday's game brought a few people out we don't see very often:

  • the missing nigerian was no longer missing.  he came back with a few new tricks that amazed us all.

  • aaron "please shove me" sherrill is a familiar face too but hasn't been in a little while.  good to see him.

  • ryan (aka, the marine) joined us being very few, very proud, very marine.

missing from the mix still are:

  • don, but we know you are still recovering from knee stuff.

  • drew--not sure what his excuse is.

  • 1kb who is probably doing a bit of road work as he had told us.

we had a good nine, four vs. five, and it was a fun time, as always.  and i'm sure tomorrow will be big fun too.  be a part of it.  come home to hoops!

worked out

everytime we play the three-on-three full court, i always feel like i've played!

friday is go.  come out for more playin'.  headband steve won't be there, so we'll need at least one more to cover his spot.  has anyone seen the missing nigerian?  wherez he been?  and rob e rob was more than likely snoozin' on one of his mornings off.  let's see if he comes back on friday.  if you've been slackin', now's the time to step up.  don't wait for the new year's to make the resolution to play.  beat the rush.  come now!

Monday, October 16, 2006

we came, we played

back to a good four-on-four matchup this morning. we had a special guest, rob e rob (not to be confused with doug e doug). looks like he came to play, and he wasn't as out of shape as we thought he'd be for being gone all those months. poor drew lost the $15 bet we had that rob e rob would be useless halfway through the first game. he came out quite strong bringing his game. ok, so drew didn't really bet any of his cash, but you were sitting there thinking how you could get in on that action next time. i know you were.

i don't know about anyone else, but the funniest moment of this morning was when bogie made the overhead power save right into the chest of mike cho (aka mc). i swear i think it knocked mc back a foot or two when it impacted his chest. pluses, however, to mc for the great, homemade sound effects made when the ball collided with his sternum. i think part of the cry was surprise, though. i couldn't stop laughing for three plays as i kept seeing that clip play over and over in my head. that was really a treat.

see you kids wednesday!

Friday, October 13, 2006

odd day

well, due in large part to the men's retreat, the numbers were quite low today.  two-on-two half.  bandanas against...the plain heads.  i could have probably played better, i'm sure.  bogie played the part of 1kb by bringing his patented "chop" defense.  he was lining up threes all morning forcing me to actually have to play defense (can you believe that?).

when it was all said and done, dennis and bogie were both pretty tired.  headband steve and i were little winded, but we decided that plain heads needed to stop after three games.
we will be back on the court on monday.  come amped.

ps:  i saved my red bull for monday.  i saved for all of you who were mia today.

Thursday, October 12, 2006

yes, we are...

...playing in the morning!  sorry this didn't get published sooner, but work has been a little stacked lately.  you might not even see this until it's too late.  even if you are reading it after the fact, get in your delorean, drive to the church at about 88 miles per hour, and you'll get to play anyway.

Monday, October 9, 2006

playin' the w

four-on-four full had some good times this morning.  i think one morning when we play on a holiday, we should all head over to waffle house after hoops.  i mean, it's the one place that serves breakfast where you don't have to dress up nice to eat.  we can just walk in as-is and get some eggs and bacon and waffles all scrambled, smothered, and covered.  you guys think about it and let me know.

for now, we play on the w.  that's wednesday.  same bat time, same bat gym.

Sunday, October 8, 2006

our gym

we get our gym back tomorrow. we can play. hope your muscles got a good rest on friday. i totally enjoyed sleeping in a little longer on friday. but i'm going to bed early to make sure i get plenty of rest so the red bull will bring my levels up.

see you guys in the morning!

Thursday, October 5, 2006

no hoops friday!

in case you didn't get the email, no hoops tomorrow. this is what we are facing (see picture).

we'll go at this on monday. and if you didn't get the email, check the mailing list link on the right for info on how to become a subscriber.

unreal tournament

nine was the number.  four-five was the split.  and the fantastic four came out strong.  yellow was shamed after the first game.  i heard don make some "wow" comment as soon as the last points zipped through.  it took four games for yellow to have any stake in this morning's tournament.  the five finally got a break with some outside shooting putting numbers back on the board.  plus there were a few good drives by headband steve.  it should be noted that the fantastic four included 1kb (one-kidney bill).  i think he's recovered.  the other members of the four were long-range mike, wonder jeff, and the nigerian.

i will post here friday the status of the court, whether we'll be in half session or not.  wait for it.

what i learned today:  alka-seltzer nighttime cold and sinus meds don't leave you at your best in the mornings no matter how much red bull you drink.

Monday, October 2, 2006

rough monday

this three-on-three-full-court stuff is killer. adding just player to both sides makes a big difference. i'm glad this configuration gives us all the exercise because i'm not sure i'm getting much else from it. on a personal note: my apologies to don and drew, who would have done probably better if i had just at home in bed. (we all might have done better.)

so, we are totally on for hoops wednesday, this is the big one as we might not have full court on friday. i will be there on thursday night and will post here that evening if we can be at least half court. check your email or this site for the news. then you too can be down with the 411. drew sez if we have at least four-on-four for wednesday, he'll show us his no-chair-slam-dunk move. ok, so he didn't say that, but that, i'm sure, he dreams about!

Sunday, October 1, 2006

another update: monday hoops are on!

sonny reports that the gym was cleared today.  monday hoops are on.  come in the morning.

Friday, September 29, 2006

update: no monday!

i got a message from elaine today stating no hoops on monday or friday.  i don't know yet if there is a half court option on monday, and i'll still not know about friday's court size until after wednesday night.

if someone wants to volunteer to check on sunday evening to find out and let me know, i'll post here.  unless i hear something, i'll assume we don't play.

back to eight

good ol' four-on-four basketball.  just like in philly...except not as cold and minus one person per team and no steak and cheese after you eat.  ok, so i never really played basketball in philly, but fresh prince did.  "in west philadelphia born and raised, on the playground is where i spent most of my days.  chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool, shootin' some b-ball outside of the school...."  you know the rest.

i'm sitting at my favorite starbucks writing this up.  i'm taking a day off.  jealous?  ha!

this morning was good hoops.  1k bill claimed he was only half the man he usually is, although i don't think i'd quite make that claim.  he held up well with that status.  justin the nigerian (would that make him ni-justin?) was his normal active self.  just think what he might be like with some red bull in him.  and steve trying to steal don's trademark corner three pointer.  we'll let them fight it out on the court.

note for monday:  steel-toed nikes are strong suggested.  it seems that we've giving up twisting our ankles to wrecking our toes.  maybe it's because our ankles are damaged they can't make the news anymore.

keep in mind that next friday might yield us only half a court or no court.  i think we'll get half.  more on that as it develops.

have a good weekend!

t-minus 11 and holding...

once again, eleven.

can't believe we saw aaron "please shove me" sherrill again. one kidney bill is still in the mix. (steve pointed out he should be called 1k bill.) one-eyed dave is going under the blade to become two-eyed dave again. not that he needed any more help with his game. he said he'll be out for a month. and mike has officially extended his range to two feet in from the half court line.

oh, and it was good to see the missing nigerian. welcome back, kotter.

come back on friday. we'll be down at least one. that should make us ten. but then i heard rumors of yet another person coming out who wasn't present the past couple of times this week. maybe eleven will be our number again.

ps: did you guys feel the chill in the air when we left? drew pointed it out that he did indeed bring his stone cold game. who wants to bring their stone cold on friday? anyone? bueller?

Tuesday, September 26, 2006

chill in the air?

oh, by the way, drew says that if you feel the air cooler than normal tomorrow morning when you step out for hoops, it's because he's bringing some stone cold action to all y'all.  and when you leave and feel the chill again, it'll be a reminder of what just happened.

(ok, so he didn't really say that.  but he was thinkin' it.)

bring it!

post madness

monday was indeed madness.  we played hard and had fun and a zero body count.  can't ask for more.

it was good to see one-kidney bill back with us again.  welcome to the party (again).  drew brought some game with him, as did furlough greg.  and aaron "please shove me" sherrill made a guest appearance.  total them up to equal eleven again.  seem to be keeping that number alive.

we play midweek.  come wednesday.  it's free.

Sunday, September 24, 2006

monday madness

got a strange need for some basketball you can't seem to kick? is it a desire that seems to overcome and excite you when it crosses your mind? do you lay out shorts and shoes the night before in anticipation?

if this sounds like you, you might have a case of madness that can only be resolved by playing hoops...tomorrow morning.

if you don't have that feeling yet, check the pictures below. they might help motivate.

from seven to eleven

only since the first of this year have we seen the number we did today.  eleven people.  i have to admit that i was finding it a little hard to sub in and out since my bod is used to going full steam the whole time.  nevertheless, it was good to have the crew as big as it was.

same stuff on friday.  see you guys then.

Sunday, September 17, 2006

see you in the morning

i'm getting ready to head to bed.  i'll see you gents in the morning.

Thursday, September 14, 2006

back to fridays

after a couple of fridays off, we're back on track with the friday schedule a go.

two known peeps will not be there, so in order to have the groovy number of eight people will need to make sure one more person joins the posse.  promise gifts and kickbacks if they come.  whatever it takes.

that reminds me:  i need to pick up some red bull on the way home from work.

Tuesday, September 12, 2006

dreams

i had a dream last night that i was playing basketball.  it was four-on-four, and i just grabbed the ball on a rebound/steal/whatever and drove to the other end of the court.  my guys were already there (but no defense).  i stopped at the three point line and shot.  i was still moving forward when i took the shot yet it fell grossly short of the basket.  i yelled out to (aaron, i believe) to save it, which he did.  dennis was there to get the pass and put the lay up right in.  the defense never got there in time.

make your dreams come true!  play hoops with us tomorrow morning!

Sunday, September 10, 2006

half full?

well, i checked out the gym tonight and the floor was completely empty.  at least, that is how it was a little after 8:00p.  i don't know if they were going to set up tonight or what.  i would suggest keeping with the plan for half court.

Friday, September 8, 2006

monday hoops

this is the email from elaine:
the gym will not be available on monday. actually, from now on when there is a senior luncheon, the gym won't be available that morning. there is a senior luncheon once a month on either the first or second monday of the month.

i don't know if we'll be able to play half court yet. if someone could spare a pair of eyes later on sunday to determine if the half will be available, we might could play that.

Wednesday, September 6, 2006

reminder: no friday hoops

don't forget to sleep in on friday, unless you guys want to plan to meet on the greens for nine holes before 7:00a.  dennis, can you hook us up?

we'll get it all back together on monday for a full week of hoops.  andrew said he was disappointed in the amount of smack that was down today.  he says to you all, "your mama!"  i don't think we can let him just walk away with that kind of in-your-face speak.  (ok, so he really didn't say that again, but it got you going again, didn't it?)

let it simmer and come back on monday.

Tuesday, September 5, 2006

tip-off time

back to the normal schedule of 6:00a hoops tomorrow morning. i plan on waking up on time this time and not to leave you guys hanging. tip-off time is hopefully closer to 6:00a than 7:00a.

andrew said he's ready to put some smackdown on anyone coming tomorrow. sounds like a good challenge to me. nothing brings out the best in us like a good taunt, right? ok, so he didn't really say that. but weren't you ready for him? that's what i'm talking about.

Wednesday, August 30, 2006

no hoops this friday or next

this message from elaine:

The gym will not be available for the next 2 Friday mornings for basketball. I am sorry. We don't have enough maintenance/setup staff right now so we're having to make some temporary adjustments.

crazy wednesday

we had our midweek three-on-three spectacular this morning.  full court.  that's why it was crazy.  well, that, and some of our playing.  good thing we can laugh at ourselves...or at least each other.

i think don's suggestion to bring cash on friday is a good one.  if you come, bring a five spot for the good idea.

that said, i'll probably be working late night thursday/early friday morning.  if i am, i won't make the games, but i'll find a way to get the money to the right person for my contribution.  this also means john will need to plan to open the shop.  i hope to make it, but if things go like i found out this morning, i won't.

Tuesday, August 29, 2006

feel the draft

as it stands right now, we'll need to draft at least one more person for tomorrow if we are to have eight.  mike is only mondays right now, and with jeff gone we'll be down to seven.

is there anyone we can reactivate from our past to make the numbers?  if you can bring a pal, it would make it much more fun.  tell them it's free.  that might just be the incentive they need.

Wednesday, August 23, 2006

hatin'?

i think we were all hatin' our own game at some point this morning.  i know i was, missing all the lay ups and easy shots.

what i hated worse was the four on three match up we had since prime number seven was our total count.  it sure would be nice to have evens on friday, hint, hint.

i am going to do my best to be there despite feeling like i'm coming down with my first cold of the season.  lotsa vitamin c and zinc are on my menu for the next couple of days, including some rest.

peace out!

Tuesday, August 22, 2006

looking forward

i'm so looking forward to play some hoops in the morning.  i think it will be awesome!  especially if we have ten players.

remember:  don't hate the player, hate the game.  (don't be a playah hatah!)

Sunday, August 20, 2006

don't forget!

hoops.  tomorrow.  morning.  gym.  come alone.

Friday, August 18, 2006

a good friday

we had a perfect ten for the count today.  and it seems that we all brought our running shoes and left our game in our cars...at least for the first half of the first game.  (i felt like my shots were so upwards.)

we all are bringing it back on monday.  if you can't bring it then, send it with someone else.

Thursday, August 17, 2006

bring game

it's bring yo game friday!  bringing a friend would help us have enough playas, but if you can bring yo game then we can definitely guarantee some matches that will be real.

same bat time, same bat channel!

Sunday, August 13, 2006

looking for good numbers for monday

will get enough? eight maybe? we'll see.

Friday, August 11, 2006

seven is still lucky (i guess)

we had another seven people today playing full court. it was fun. my feet were still stuck to the ground. dennis even asked if the floor had been cleaned recently, so i know it's not just me.

we'll be bringing our game on monday. if you haven't shown up in a while, you can still come. seven is not too bad, but ten is better.

Wednesday, August 9, 2006

we're back!

seven us made an apparence this morning for some full court hoops. i'm glad to be back. i did feel like my shoes were glued to the floor too much this morning. that's what happens when you miss a week of much needed aerobic exercise.

we're playing wednesday for sure. be there!

Friday, August 4, 2006

no hoops on monday either!

per elaine, we are on hold again.
The gym will not be available for you all until Wednesday, 8/9. Sorry you're not getting to enjoy your games much these days. Children's Ministry has the gym sewn up quite a bit these days.

Thursday, August 3, 2006

no hoops for friday!

well, elaine has said things were still not good for hoops tomorrow morning, august 4.

i guess we'll try on monday.

:(
