happy new year!

back by popular demand, we'll be playing tomorrow morning.  same early time as normal.  i'm sure no snow will inhibit the activity.  i'll be there with an opened gym!

happy new year, playahz!

the 2009 final day of hoops

we've had quite a reunion in the past few months.  dennis "d-assassin" came back to us late this fall.  then before christmas we were visited by two old friends, drew home from school and one-kidney bill all the way from portland.  (1kb topped us off at 10 players last wednesday when we needed it.)  then this past week, we saw the return of the one and only missing nigerian...and his brother too.  it's nice having the old gang back together again.

if you all are still in town, join us for tomorrow's final day of round ball for this calendar.  it will be most excellent.

two days to recover

christmas eating has taken it toll on all you guys.  denial isn't the option.  three games of hoops is.  same time.  keeping it simple.  see you then.

oh, in case you were curious how the song ended:

...my teammates gave to me:

sleeping in till twelve,
  one more game to eleven,
    ten cans of red bull,
  nine ball cage padlocks,
    eight guys (at least),
  a seven minute stretch time,
   six fouls per man,
     five oraaaange rimmms!
        four nylon nets,
          three point shots,
            two nike airs,
              and everyone arriving early.

Tuesday, December 22, 2009

on the eleventh hoops day of christmas...

...my teammates gave to me:

one more game to eleven,
 ten cans of red bull,
   nine ball cage padlocks,

 eight guys (at least),
    a seven minute stretch time,
 six fouls per man,
   five oraaaange rimmms!
      four nylon nets,
        three point shots,
          two nike airs,
             and everyone arriving early.

tomorrow is our last day to play this week.  come and enjoy it.  it was good to have drew back with us again.  now, if only sneaky don were to show....

Sunday, December 20, 2009

on the tenth hoops day of christmas...

...my teammates gave to me:

 ten cans of red bull,
    nine ball cage padlocks,

      eight guys (at least),
    a seven minute stretch time,
      six fouls per man,
    five oraaaange rimmms!

      four nylon nets,
        three point shots,
          two nike airs,
             and everyone arriving early.

i'll take silence as meaning only two days this week and two days next week.  we'll plan on only mondays and wednesdays this week and next.  note the calendar at westparkhoops.com.

Thursday, December 17, 2009

on the ninth day hoops day of christmas...

...my teammates gave to me:

  nine ball cage padlocks,
    eight guys (at least),
      a seven minute stretch time,
    six fouls per man,
      five oraaaange rimmms!
    four nylon nets,
      three point shots,
        two nike airs,
           and everyone arriving early.

still hadn't heard back from anyone about the next couple of weeks.  if no one has feedback, i'll assume we'll only play on monday and wednesday of the next two weeks.

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

on the eighth hoops day of christmas...

...my teammates gave to me:

 eight guys (at least),
     a seven minute stretch time,
   six fouls per man,
     five oraaaange rimmms!
   four nylon nets,
     three point shots,
       two nike airs,
          and everyone arriving early.

no votes on the week of christmas and new year's?  i figure a MTW run was a quite the hit to our bodies.  what about a MWR (monday, wednesday, thursday) mornings?  does that sound appealing?

Sunday, December 13, 2009

on the seventh hoops day of christmas...

...my teammates gave to me:

 a seven minute stretch time...
   six fouls per man,
     five oraaaange rimmms!
   four nylon nets,
     three point shots,
       two nike airs,
          and everyone arriving early.

still hoping for that last one.  by the way, consider what days we might want to play the week of christmas and the week after christmas.

Thursday, December 10, 2009

on the sixth hoops day of christmas...

...my teammates gave to me:

six fouls per man... five oraaaange rimmms! four nylon nets, three point shots, two nike airs, and everyone arriving early.

grab your parkas and come warm up!

on the fifth hoops day of christmas...

...my teammates gave to me:
  five...oraaaange...rims!
    four nylon nets,
  three point shots,
    two nike airs,
      and everyone one arriving early.

see you guys in the morning!

first monday of the last month of 2009

can you believe this year is almost over?  now's the time to make the most of what's left by coming out tomorrow.  of course, i'd say this about wednesday and friday too.  in fact, just plan on coming all this month to make the most of it.  don't let this year fade into the past without a proper memory.  remember the alamo!

Thursday, December 3, 2009

just think: a week ago was thankgiving and we didn't meet for basketball on friday. we slept in or got up to shop. (if you were my sister, she was out ALL NIGHT shopping.)

but that was then and this is now. tomorrow is normal friday hoops, just like we are accustomed. normal times, the usual guys...with maybe a few changes. flash should be back with us next week and an new guy might join our ranks (if he can get up early enough).

come early to warm up (and stretch)!

Tuesday, December 1, 2009

more of that

it seems that one day wasn't enough to deal with the thanksgiving stuffing of last week.  tomorrow will be another day to come purge the critical mass you might have acquired last week.  i know i'll need it.

be careful out there, especially when playing unsanctioned games on off days (gene).  the injuries could impact conference game days.  :)  see you all in the morning.

Sunday, November 29, 2009

drag it out tomorrow

just like you had to drag those christmas decorations out of the attic (and in my case the tree as well), it's time to drag your turkey-laden bodies back out to the court tomorrow morning to undo last thursday...and friday...and probably saturday too.  can't wait to run again.

i'll be there as usual with an open gym kinda early for those who wish to do some warming up.  how early you ask?  just ask bryce.  he usually beats you all in when he comes.  see ya!

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

the hoops marathon continues

tomorrow is the final day of the three-day stretch.  and speaking of stretching, my muscles are in great need of some serious attention after today's games.  visa (aka trent) was right that we'll be napping for two days on the sofa, all through thankgiving.  but those two days of rest are my incentive to push through one more day of hoops.

and it seems everyone has been having fun with the teams matched up they way they have been.  there have been some good games played.

set your alarms for tomorrow, get some rest tonight,  take some ibuprofin, and prepare for the final day of action packed mornings.  then you can enjoy macy's t-giving day parade.

Monday, November 23, 2009

tuesday special

the word on the street is that we have enough playahz for tuesday hoops!  since our bodies are probably in a routine of getting a day of rest in between sessions, this should be quite the shock to the system.  so you'll probably need to have a chat with your body to let it know that tomorrow takes the place of black friday when your wives will be dragging you out to all the crowded stores to get the best deals in the world.  since i am single, i'll probably get up late and mosey into the kitchen and cook up some bacon, eggs, and pancakes while i sit on the sofa to watch some tivo.  but i digress.

come tomorrow for tuesday power hoops!  special tuesday games start at 5:55a.

Sunday, November 22, 2009

three-day week after all

there was a suggestion to play monday, TUESDAY, and wednesday this coming week since not enough people will be aroundon friday. so, i need to know interest. reply and let me know which days you plan to attend. let me know asap, so we can make tuesday plans.

kthxbai.

too comfortable

don't get too comfortable expecting muffins all the time playing basketball.  gene, aka "the muffin man," brought up some post-hoops goodies this past wednesday to celebrate pirate dave's birthday.  and we had the numbers for full teams.  pirate dave shed a lonely tear when he realized matched teams AND muffins.

"i never thought we'd have enough guys on my birthday.  and the muffins are just icing on the cake!" said pirate dave, emotionally moved.  "it was the best birthday evar!  and you guys are the best evar!"

thanks for the muffins, gene, and for all the guys that came out to make this past wednesday special for pirate dave.

of course, we'll be playing the same ol' tomorrow morning.  same time and stuff.  no muffins, but guaranteed fun.

oh, and mark it down:  we'll be playing monday and wednesday next week, but not friday.  there will be too many people gone to attempt that day.  you'll have to find other ways to get rid of your turkey pounds.

:)

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

birthday basketball

pirate dave's birthday is tomorrow.  come celebrate his thirty-eighth trip around the big ball o' gas and fire with an exciting game of basketball.  it's almost an occasion for cake and ice cream, but i'm sure we won't have any of that there.  in fact, in lieu of presents, your presence would be present enough for him, i'm sure.  having matched numbers for teams is a gift for which he might shed a tear.

come see pirate dave cry!  be a part of it!

note:  the "big ball o' gas and fire" is the sun.  if you thought i was referring to pirate dave, you were mistaken.

jump to it

monday is for hoops.  we have a gym.  we have basketballs.  all we need are the players.  ten total would be nice.

i'll be there.  ready for the other nine.

Thursday, November 12, 2009

when trent comes, he'll be on our team

wednesday's 3-on-4 was quiet the workout, from one of the three's perspective.  it was fun while i had oxygen.  and things might have gone differently...when trent shows up.  he'll be on our team.

trent, where are you?

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

14 just 7 ago

we had 14 people show up last week.  that's quite a crew.  of course, there were only 5 on friday.  we had 9 on monday.  hmm, 9 + 5 = 14.  you can't ignore that math.

how many tomorrow?  hopefully, enough.  of course, i think eight is enough.

you know the drill.  tomorrow morning.  be there.

Sunday, November 8, 2009

hello monday

monday holds basketball in the morning for those interested.  i'm interested.  i'll be there.

by the way, how many showed up on friday?

Thursday, November 5, 2009

all the fun

if you've had fun playing this past week, make it three days of total basketball excitement.  come friday.  match wits.  battle for victory.  and all this with pals.

how much better could it get?

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

thank you sir, may i have another...

that about sums up how i felt when i left the gym monday morning.  bill mentioned they were good games.  despite losing--and not being able to drop 94% of my shots--i have to agree.  maybe it was the new floor that made the difference...any difference...whatever.

if you had fun on monday, come back tomorrow.  bonus thing about tomorrow is we won't have to set up after.

Sunday, November 1, 2009

prestine

come tomorrow to see the newly refinished floor.  it's ready for some basketball.  it'll never be readier than now.  i'll see you tomorrow morning.

Thursday, October 29, 2009

friday off

don't forget to unset your clocks for tomorrow morning so that you can sleep in.  we're taking it off so that the floor can be redone.  when we come back on monday, we'll have a shiny new floor.  bring your cameras and see you then!

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

last day this week

tomorrow is the final day we'll get to play this week.  thursday and friday are reserved for floor work.  we'll have a new court come monday.  come commemorate the last time we'll get to play on the floor we have.  then you can make your own comparisons next week.

come ready to play for two days.

Thursday, October 22, 2009

ten is great, i feel old

having a full five-on-five wednesday morning makes a big difference in how that game is played.  as much as i appreciate the exercise of four-on-four full court, the dynamics of ten guys facing off has a lot more excitement.

i have to admit that after we played our games on wednesday morning, i believe i am beginning to feel as old as bill after i sit down at my desk for work.  body aching, staying tired longer, wishing for a nap....  truly, i don't know how he does it.  but if he can pull it together, then certainly i can too, right?  thanks, bill, for setting the pace for keeping us all going, no matter how run down our bodies get.  you're the inspiration!

see you in the morning!

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

thanks for the eight

i thank you guys who were able to make the numbers full court-able.  i needed a good run after this past weekend.  and i'm still up for some high activity tomorrow.  bring your best basketball shoes.

come early.  the sooner we start, the more games we can play.

Sunday, October 18, 2009

warm your engines

the only way to reclaim your missing summer/fall temps is to come play tomorrow morning. we do well with eight. we'd do better with ten.

(some of you need to bring notes from your wives for last week's absences. you know who you are.)

see you chosen ten tomorrow!

Thursday, October 15, 2009

full ten friday?

will there be a full ten players tomorrow morning? we've not played the past two fridays, so it would on fair to fridays to play this friday.

as usual, i'll be there tomorrow morning early. come and play!

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

more than monday (we hope)

ok, you ladies who went on the men's retreat and played volleyball all night, time to get your bods up for some basketball.  the five (then four) of us on monday had a good time playing some street two-on-two, but we are looking for some real men who want to play a real sport.  if you choose to leave your skirts at home, you can join us tomorrow morning bright and early.  the four of us will be waiting for you.

Sunday, October 11, 2009

back at it again

hope you had a good friday off.  tomorrow is another monday, another morning of hoops.  come and play.

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

no friday hoops again

this time, the men's retreat is pulling a big chunk of the regulars out of the mix.  so, we'll plan to reconvene on monday for the standard fun.

i heard there was a plan for some extended play hoops at the men's retreat, though.  if you are going, be there for that.  and it probably won't be as early as we normally play.

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

promises for wednesday

i've heard some verbal promises for playing some wednesday hoops.  base on that, i expect for an easy ten.  but as i know the nature of west park hoops, we'll never know until we are ready to play.  nevertheless, i'll be there to play hard.  see you guys in the morning.

Sunday, October 4, 2009

yes for monday

friday was a last minute holiday for us, but monday is normal schedule for us.  if you missed the email or didn't get email, you can always check the website (www.westparkhoops.com).  there's a handy google calendar you can add/merge to your google calendar to keep the dates close.  or you can sign up for the email.  follow the direction on the site to do that.  (you can subscribe to that list and unsubscribe at will.)

see you tomorrow morning!

Thursday, October 1, 2009

NO hoops tomorrow (oct 2)

sorry, guys.  as soon as i sent the other message, the notice popped into my inbox letting me know the gym is unavailable tomorrow, oct 2.  bring your gazelle-selves on monday, oct 5.

be the gazelle

having a matched five-on-five group yesterday makes the whole hoops experience a wonderful thing.  i'm hoping for the same number tomorrow to make the friday just as fun as the wednesday.

bring your gazelle-like skillz to the court.

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

come out, come out...

i don't know where the people have been, but the past couple of mondays have been low numbers.  last wednesday suffered too, but i'm hoping that last week won't repeat tomorrow.  i already know a couple of attendees said they would be missing tomorrow.  we need a few guys to fill in those holes.

see you ten tomorrow.

Sunday, September 27, 2009

train

start your live long day tomorrow by getting your caboose on the right track with morning hoops.  it doesn't take an engineer to know you'll run out of steam if you don't set your alarm and go to bed early.  it still may not stop a locomotive, like pirate dave, no matter how much sleep you get.

come tomorrow so we'll have another good match up of five-on-five.

Thursday, September 24, 2009

coming tomorrow?

are you coming tomorrow?  i'll be there.

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

all those games on monday

after four games on monday, i felt very spent...well, more like used.  of course, we are really there for the exercise, yeah?  and i have to say that trent's display of "special shots" continues to impress.

i'll be there tomorrow morning at the same time.  come and play some basketball.

Sunday, September 20, 2009

last of the summer hoops

tomorrow marks the end of the summer hoops.  say good-bye to summer.  celebrate with basketball.  and don't worry about the rain.  it'll be doing that all week.

flash needs to get up for hoops

rumor on the street is that flash is available to play some hoops in the mornings. he's only even really come when there's been a holiday. but now he can join us every day of the week, even though we only play on mondays, wednesdays, and fridays. so, flash, come join us tomorrow morning or...you're a girl.

see ya!

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

whoooh, we're half way there...

half way through september already. we're also halfway through this week. if you've made this far, you can make it the rest of the way livin' on a prayer. show up tomorrow at 5:55a for more of the stuff you love.

Sunday, September 13, 2009

unwind

what better way to start your week tha unwinding to tune of three games of basketball. some people don't get it this good. unwind at 5:55a.

ps: we're gonna have to set up for the lunch after. come early.

Thursday, September 10, 2009

bring it back tomorrow

even though it's a short week, don't make tomorrow like last week.  make it more like wednesday with enough bodies to work off what donuts you'll probably eat by the time you get into the office. we'll be
starting at the normal time. see you then!

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

ready for wednesday?

are you guys ready for wednesday hoops? tomorrow morning will be open and ready for the crew to run the court and throw a round bouncy ball toward metal hoops with nets. come and exercise yourselves. it's that same time we normally play.

btw, how many showed up for labor day hoops?

Tuesday, September 1, 2009

more than that

hey, kids! so, we were getting ready to play on monday morning and it hit us: we sure could use more people to make this worth while.  nevertheless, we made due with what we had, but now i'm sending one of these emails checking to see if there will be bodies to play tomorrow and friday...and monday too. for tomorrow, i don't need a show of hands. but if you are planning (or not) to come friday and monday, please indicate. it helps to decide if getting up and opening the gym will be worth it or not those days.

kthxbai!

Sunday, August 30, 2009

wake up and play

set your alarms to wake up and come play some hoops. your body will be happy you did that for it. it might be so happy that it will treat you to some biscuits and gravy after.

also, let me know you are planning to play next monday morning, labor day. who's gonna get up early for that?

Thursday, August 27, 2009

4 vs 4

we've done this twice this past week. it makes me wonder if we'll have four-on-four tomorrow again too. it sure does make for more of a work out we both teams miss that one player.

don't hurt yourself trying to get there tomorrow!

Tuesday, August 25, 2009

keeping it round

you've kept it real, now keep it round. roundball, that is. we play again tomorrow morning. i might have scared bill off after last friday. speaking of bill, 1kb's last day with us could be tomorrow, so come and see him off just in case.

be there or be square. but keep it round.

Sunday, August 23, 2009

where has the time gone?

it's almost the end of august now, and you have to ask yourself "where has the time gone?" ok, you don't have to ask yourself that, but you could. and you could ponder it too. and if you ponder it for any length of time, you'll come up with only one answer: in the past. it's all behind us now.

but not tomorrow morning. not yet, anyway. and we'll be there playing some exciting basketball, because boring basketball is not exciting.

figure it out.

Thursday, August 20, 2009

when will bill arrive?

bill said he'd get the pump from his office to get the basketballs to bounce correctly. he even said he'd come in a little early to do this. so, let's figure this out: bryce has a tendency to come as early as i do, if not earlier. then we see aaron, neal, and/or brandon if he comes. then usually trent, then gene, then the rest.  if bill comes early to get the pump, that would put him somewhere between neal and trent, i would guess.

pool has been started. pick your slots and come see who's a winner.

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

the final days of 1kb

although one kidney bill (1kb) doesn't leave until next week, we got a chance to have him play in our mix this past monday. there might not be too many more days like this. who knows if he will be able to be there tomorrow or friday or any next week. with this level of uncertainty, it's good to show up in order to catch a glimpse of the legend before he jumps to the other side of the country.

we play at sunrise, which i believe is still at 5:55a.

Sunday, August 16, 2009

back in action

we're back in action tomorrow morning for basketball. i believe we'll
have a good, healthy crew of people to make some teams.

get some sleep, and i'll see you in the morning.

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

no hoops friday

friday is another the-gym-is-booked day meaning that we get a day off from hoops.  take the day to reflect on your game, your basketball outfit, and waffles (at the waffle house).  come back monday morning with a full head of new ideas, new moves, and some rad shirt-shorts combos.

enjoy the weekend!

Tuesday, August 11, 2009

cooler weather

it was a warm gym on monday. i hope for those warm gym mornings in the winter months, but not during the humidity of summer. at one point, pirate dave walked over to guard me and you actually hear the squoosh as the bumped me. ask bryce. he heard it too. soggy.

you might want to bring your iced tea when you come on wednesday just in case. no matter what, we'll keep the trend of playing three days a week by holding it tomorrow as usual. come early to get a good parking place.

Sunday, August 9, 2009

still up?

if you are still up and wondering about basketball, wonder no more.
it is on. i'm getting this out later than i wanted. but show up
anyway. it'll be great!

Thursday, August 6, 2009

come morning, start early

mr. myagi told daniel-san that on many occasions as he was learning to wax on, wax off. and i would like to echo that same instruction to you guys. there might not be any wax, but there will be basketball. you know about that.

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

back in action

after playing a little 3-on-3 half court monday, i'm ready to get back
in the full court action. and since setup monday is behind us, the
rest of you guys can come back out and play. (it's safe.)

it's august. fall is right around the corner. cooler mornings,
shorter days. come out tomorrow when it's still light enough to find
a good parking space.

Sunday, August 2, 2009

take down/set up

it's one of those mornings again. come early to help disassemble.
stick around after to reassemble. as we are now professionals at
this, it should go quickly.

Thursday, July 30, 2009

the three one

thirty days has september, april, june, and november. all the rest
have thirty-one...including this month. and that three one is
tomorrow. set your clocks tonight to wake up early to see the early
version of the final day of july. and then get in your car and
drive--wait, put on some pants, THEN get in your car and drive to the
wp gym and play some basketball, foolz!

i'll meet you there.

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

i remember being young

the crew on monday was pleasantly (to use the term loosely) reminded
of our youth. i remember being faster than i am now. i remember
quick reflexes and keen dexterity. i get some of it back with the red
bulls i drink before playing each morning, but not to the degree we
found yesterday. i don't know if tomorrow will bring back all those
memories again, but you might be able to relive your youth if you show
up on wednesday morning.

young or old, we start early. be there at 5:55a for all the exercise.

Sunday, July 26, 2009

plus and minus

due to the fact that a few of our guys will be involved in the early
morning golf benefit for melanie watson, we'll need a few more dudes
to help make our eight game minimum. please come and call a veteran
to come make up the numbers for tomorrow.

see you then!

Thursday, July 23, 2009

lessons from the prince

remember this diddy?
in west philadelphia born and raised,
on the playground is where i spent most of my days.
chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool,
and shootin' some b-ball right outside the school.
when a couple of guys who were up to no good,
started makin' trouble in my neighborhood.
i got in one little fight and my mother got scared and said,
"you move in wit your uncle and auntie in bel air."

and it goes on. he moves, starts a new life in california, learns
some life lessons, etc. what i'm hoping we can take away from this is
that as long we don't make any trouble for each other, no one else
will have to move to california (or portland). now i know that 1kb is
leaving because of a job opportunity, but we don't have to lose
anybody else because of little fights and scared mamas. we can keep
chillin' out, maxin', and relaxin' all cool, just like the fresh
prince. we can continue to be shootin' some b-ball all our days.

let's learn from the lives of others. a'ight, i'll see you guys early
in the morning.

peace out.

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

clash of 2009

games on monday were good, despite being on the losing team...all
three times. it seemed there was an even matching and some long
struggles. i felt sufficiently worked out when i left the gym. i
considered it a good day.

it would be great to have that clash tomorrow, to bring two evenly
balanced teams into battle for points, running some plays, working out
a full court throw down. if you know what i'm talking about, i know
you'll be there. if you haven't got a clue, might i suggest checking
out this site: http://tinyurl.com/25xwl5.

see you tomorrow! get there early for clash pictures. :D

Sunday, July 19, 2009

brand new week

i'm looking forward to a brand new week of basketball. after the mess
on friday anything is welcome.

come early, leave happy.

Thursday, July 16, 2009

ground control to major trent

after waiting over a month, the shuttle endeavour launched
successfully yesterday evening. (inspection of the shuttle during the
routine heat shield check will determine if the shuttle was damaged on
take off. i still consider it a success.) the shuttles are old but
not unusable and certainly not junk.

if you want to see junk launched, come to hoops tomorrow and watch me
shoot. you'll get your money's worth.

some good footage of the launch is posted on youtube by nasa right
here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DNljVcs6Dc.

1kb filler

thanks to one kidney bill (aka 1kb), we ended up with awesome number
of eight on monday.  he came in at just the right time wearing just
the right color shirt.  way to be the filler we needed, 1kb.

you can be a filler too, although we'd prefer that you show up before
the "just getting ready to play" mark.  if you come a little early,
you can get some stretch/warm up time in before the show.  that warm
up time makes a big difference.

and i believe our swamp will be gone.  that'll be a plus.

see ya!

midsummer morn's hoops

to play or not to play. that is the question. whether tis nobler to play roundball to sleep in, we should all know the right and true answer. but get thee to gym-ary. and early as we need to tear it downeth and rebuildeth it posthaste.

but something is rotten in the state of denmark. out, out, darn spot! come out and make the number all eight (or ten).

on the morrow, then.

calling all cars

with a few people not here tomorrow due to trips and stuff, we'll need
some filler guys to pikc up that slack. the goal is at least eight.
i think we can get that if we wish really, really hard. ok, and if
alarm clocks are set. set your alarms. doors will open by 5:45a.

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

rally

we need a few more gents to make an appearance this week as a few
regulars will not be around. if you talk to anyone who has played in
the past, if you have played but not recently and feel the need to
come back, or if you have a name like "the missing nigerian," come and
join us!

we promise not to hurt you. permanently.

basketball with no setup

we are back to playing some roundball tomorrow morning at the usual
time. the bonus is that we don't have to set up for the senior
luncheon until next monday, so still show up early so we can play
easily three games with possibilities of four.

i'll be there. you should be too.

and for those who showed up on friday, you're probably not reading
these emails because you're probably not getting them, not reading
them, or don't check the website. to make this whole process easy, i
do my best to keep the email sent out so everyone knows the scoop. if
you don't want to check email, you can now visit www.westparkhoops.com
to find the blog i use to republish the notification email i send out.
options: you got 'em.

NO hoops friday

i received notification that hoops is OFF for tomorrow due to set up
for the celebrate america outreach on site.

if your business isn't working on friday, enjoy the holiday to its
fullest. if you have to work, swing by the waffle house and get some
early waffles (and bacon, of course) before heading into work. if you
order them with strawberries and blueberries with whipped cream, you
could have patriotic wafflage.

we'll pick this back up on monday to work off all the grilling added
to your guts over the weekend. and it wouldn't hurt to come a bit
early as i believe it's a set up monday.

more hoops haikus

midweek again, guys
set your clocks for early morn
and grab your hoops gear.

show up ten minutes
before six in the morning.
leave your cars out front.

stretch out and warm up,
gather around the circle
for a quick prayer time.

play until you drop.
oh, and let me know if you
will be there friday.

short and long futures

gents, tomorrow morning is hoops as normal. we will be using the basketballs we've always used because we are used to them, and they are still there. i know that familiarity will make coming back easier.

also, i have a confirm that the gym should be free on friday morning. but i want to know who all plans to show up (or if i should just sleep in on my day off). let me know.

jackpot

it felt like hitting the jackpot on wednesday with all those guys
there. i've thrown nickels and dimes in the slots when passing
through the casinos in the hotels in vegas, but i've never won
anything. seeing all you there on wednesday makes me want to hop a
plane back out west for encounters with some one arm bandits.

we do this basketball thing on friday morning as well. ya'll come
back now, ya hear?

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

lost boys

the 4-on-3 is hard on the team with 4. i mean, the team with 3 is
playing harder and will naturally have an edge. the team with 4 feels
the heaviness of the lopsidedness and misses shots. they can't seem
to feel balanced. they might walk away winning, but they really feel
like they've lost because they missed out on some real playing.

having an equal number will make this team of more feel like winners.
come do them a favor and play some basketball. their poor self esteem
could be the guilt you feel in your soul.

encouragement starts at 5:55a.

need men!

hello. we're gonna need some men to show up tomorrow to fill in our
gaps. a few of our regulars have expressed their intent to be away
tomorrow (and this week), so we're reactivating you guys.

0555 hours. see you then.

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

let the good time roll

we roll with the good times. sometimes we just roll on the ground.
we rolled with a 3-on-3 on monday. last friday was seven, monday was
six. i thought an email to remind everyone that we still meet might
be a good idea so we don't have five tomorrow.

come roll with us. it'll be good times.

Sunday, June 14, 2009

it's monday again

hope you weekend was a good one. after getting all those home
improvement projects completed, it'll be good to be back on the court
for some fun, right?

it will be a nice change of pace from the crazy weekend. see you all there!

Thursday, June 11, 2009

same drill

ok, folks! it'll be the same drill as on monday and wednesday. move a few chairs, one inflatable, blow our noses, and we're good to go.

come a little early. see you then!

Tuesday, June 9, 2009

first chair

no band camp or instrument practice here, but there are indeed chairs.
the simple cross pattern we broke down and put back up on monday will
be with us all week. it's simple, easy, and after our first run on
monday our times will only improve. trent will bring his stopwatch.

come a little early to warm up and stuff. i'll see you in the morning.

Sunday, June 7, 2009

warm week...but come anyway

weather looks to be a warm week ahead. high temps preparing us for
the initial summer day coming up quickly. but don't let this
discourage you from playing some basketball. not that it should,
anyway, right? but i don't want you to even think about using this as
an excuse for skipping.

"oh, i was so hot yesterday afternoon that i don't think i can make it
to hoops in the morning!"

excuses like that get you labelled sissy and you get to wear the pink
jersey ALL week.

be a man. be there.

Thursday, June 4, 2009

maybe drew

i heard drew say last night that he was going to show up for some
basketball tomorrow. it will be one of the last/few times he'll be
able to play for a while. he's headed off to medical school to become
a doctor and treat basketball related injuries. after fifteen years
of education, he'll come back to play regularly with us and treat our
injuries. won't it be nice to have an on-site doctor for our own
injuries?

before you (especially bill) get all smart and make jokes about this
topic and my fouling, keep in mind that tomorrow is all about drew.
it's about sharing the memories of hoops and stuff. i can't believe
our little andrew is all grown up and going off to college and stuff.

ok, see you then!

summer slim

as much as i am in denial it will actually happen, we might have
started the slim attendance season which we also refer to as summer.
i could be wrong. maybe it was just a down day. certainly was odd.
don't forget how this works, though. summer means grilling and
grilling means lots of steaks and hot dogs and burgers and chips and
watermelon and all that is a threat to your beach bod.

fear not. basketball is your solution, your cure. this exercise can
keep you looking like you stepped out of the gym (perhaps literally).
you can maintain all the work you've put into building this summer's
physique. don't let that go to waste. if you are married, your wife
will be impressed with the results. if you are single like me, it
couldn't hurt in helping you snag a date. either way, this means you.

don't spend money on other gyms or fancy contraptions. grab your
shorts and shoes and show up three days a week. it's free and
effective. just remember this: the summer slim should refer to your
bod, not morning hoops attendance.

Sunday, May 31, 2009

it's early monday time again

it's the first monday of the month, and you know what that means. yep, tear down and set up again. come a little early to help the break down process. we'll expedite the set up process like we always do. (we're getting good at this.)

see you guys then!

Thursday, May 28, 2009

last may day

i know what you're thinking. you're thinking, "how can it be the end
of may and i've already almost played a half a year's worth of hoops?"
or maybe you're thinking, "it's friday already and it feels like
thursday." or perhaps, "how much gas is left in my lawn mower?"

i don't know if i have answers to any of those questions, but i can
give you this answer: "42." (if you know what the question is, that
makes all difference in the universe.) and i can also tell you that
we indeed are ending this month with a game of basketball. come for
games.

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

monday match

monday hoops was a good match of the crew we had. thanks, bobby, for
showing up and picking up the slack for our numbers. we battled long
and hard for our exercise.

i look forward to the morrow's morn, when we all will gather yet again
for more hoopage. same time at ye olde gym. come and let yourself be
counted among the players.

Sunday, May 24, 2009

monday is a go

i think we'll have enough to play tomorrow. still won't hurt to bring a friend. same time, 5:55a. show up!

Friday, May 22, 2009

let your voice be heard

i know some have sent notes already, but i wanted to send another ping out for feedback. if you are planning on coming monday, let me hear from you by sunday morning. after that, i'll consider silence as negative. i'll send a final note out on sunday morning letting the crew know if there will be enough to play.

Thursday, May 21, 2009

long weekend

in preparation for the long weekend, it only makes sense to come play
some basketball. let me give you some reasons:

1. you'll be eating lots of grill out. lose the pounds ahead of time
so you break even.
2. it's so totally fun that you know you can't miss it.
3. we need ten guys.
4. fridays are always good days since a weekend is close.
5. you might get to see dennis (will he be there? come and see)
6. we don't play on saturday.
7. three words: waffle house after

if those reasons don't motivate, we'll try hypnosis for subconscious triggering.

speaking of a long weekend, who's gonna show for memorial day monday
hoops? i think getting a good count ahead of time will let me know if
i get to sleep in or not.

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

yes, tomorrow

sorry for the delay in getting back to notices, but it was a rough
monday. i'm planning on being there tomorrow morning. if i can't
play, i'll at least open the gym.

see you all in the morning!

Sunday, May 10, 2009

thank your mom

make sure you send your mom a text message and let her know that you are grateful for having you so you could play some basketball. if it weren't for her, you wouldn't be enjoying all the fun we all have.

shields up

communications officer: "incoming transmission, sir."
captain: "open channel. this is the captain of the starship
basketball. what are you doing this sector?"

[captain stands up from his captain's chair.]

aliens: "we have come to challenge you to a game of the round ball."
captain: "you know the rules to our games?"
aliens: "we have scanned your espn database and found all we need to know."
captain: "we have this little place on the surface of the planet
below. we'll send you the coordinates."

[captain head gestures to communications officer to transmit the numbers.]

aliens: "we have received your location coordinates. we will meet
you for the encounter."
captain: "agreed. we'll beam down at oh-five-hundred-fifty hours.
oh, and make sure you bring it!"
aliens: "oh, we will."
captain: "close channel."

[captain sits back down in the center seat and turns to his first officer...]

captain: "we'll see if they show."

no flashbacks

wednesday is a new day. don't let the unpleasant memories from monday
keep you down. no pain will stop us from all meeting around the
circle. even charlie won't ambush. remember who's got your back out
there. grab your gear and be there. the flashbacks can make you feel
timid, but that's not how we've trained. ante up and kick in like
men.

Sunday, May 3, 2009

break/set

don't forget to come a bit early tomorrow to break down the gym for
our game time. we'll also need to stick around for set back up time
too.

set your alarms!

Thursday, April 30, 2009

should i show up?

give the fact we had only four show up on wednesday, i'm wondering if i should show up tomorrow morning and open the gym. give me some feedback!

oh, and bryce misses you guys. blake, no so much.

>>> ok, we'll try again tomorrow. < <<

1 or 3

if the same blokes who showed up monday come again tomorrow, we only
need one more or three more.

be a bloke. come tomorrow. play basketball.

Sunday, April 26, 2009

despite

we are definitely playing basketball tomorrow morning, despite what
happened at the end of last week. i couldn't believe it turned out
that way. we'll be throwing the round ball around again. i just
hope it doesn't turn into another friday like that.

man.

Thursday, April 23, 2009

great expectations

it's what everyone expects, i expect. i'm talking about the right
number for hoops. we've been having the right number lately, and it's
been great. i'm not sure if i should let my expectations be so high
for tomorrow, but maybe it's fine to take that chance.

i leave you with my favorite quote from the movie "hot shots: part deux":

Rabinowitz: What are you reading?
Topper: Great Expectations.
Rabinowitz: Is it any good?
Topper: It's not what I'd hoped for.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

five words for you

i've got five words for you all: show up on time!

wait, that's not five. do i need to tell you that we're playing at
the same time tomorrow as we did on monday? no, probably not.

how about these five words: we need eight to ten guys!

hmm, still not the right number, even though it's true. and with less
than ten we could play odd numbers all at once like we have in the
past. we have a good work out and mostly a good time. pack in your
red bull and show up for some active games.

five words for you: maybe we'll play four games again like we did on monday.

aw, shucks.

Sunday, April 19, 2009

william shatner

we'll...be playing basketball...tomorrow morning at the...same time.
set your alarms...and come early...so you can...warm up.

make sure there are...ten players. that's the...best deal. i
couldn't find...a better deal...in my sleep...if i slept.

Thursday, April 16, 2009

the early bryce gets the worm

bryce has been on the ball (har, har) getting to hoops as soon as the doors are unlocked. he's beaten dennis (who's been a little missing), trent, and even neal. in fact, he pulled in the parking lot one morning ahead of me. he gets there so he can warm up. and you see how well he plays. coming early is a good thing. bryce will tell you himself how much it means to him. so, to you, bryce, a big ol' bucket of worms.

i'll see you guys there tomorrow.

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

round losers

we'll divide up into balanced teams tomorrow and play the game. suit up in your favorite jersey (just not all white/light colors this time) and down a cup of coffee to fuel your muscles. losers buy the donuts!

Sunday, April 12, 2009

rainy days and mondays

these two things get karen carpenter down, but even if we have both
tomorrow morning we'll still be playing hoops.

drag your sorry bodies out of bed for a morning of roundball challenge.

Thursday, April 9, 2009

sunrise hoops

it time for baskets, bonnets, and sunrise services. so, we'll have our own sunrise event. sunrise hoops doesn't mean you show up when the sun rises but you are done to see the sun rise.

check your almanacs and plan accordingly. i'll see you all there. (bogie, no bonnets.)

Tuesday, April 7, 2009

chains

we'll be playing some hoops on wednesday morning. plan on it. strap
those chains to your tires, reattach the snow plow to the front of
your truck, and throw your vehicle into four-wheel drive. get there
early to get a good spot around the circle. we won't be stopped by
the weather. we will prevail.

come prevail at ten till six tomorrow morning.

Sunday, April 5, 2009

hot and cold

as you are well aware if you have lived in this state for more than
two years, one day is hot, one day is cold. you can have a heat wave
and snow in the same week. this week seems to be our week for crazy
weather. no matter. we'll play hoops despite the elements. and i'm
not talking about the periodic table or chemistry elements. it's the
crazy weather elements.

keep your vows. come out and play some hoops all week.

monday is tear down/set up monday. come early to help tear down.
stay to help set back up. we've got this down to a science any more.

Thursday, April 2, 2009

kilt-free

i don't know how they play this sport in scotland, but here in knox of
ville we never wear kilts to morning hoops. this has never been
mentioned before and as it has been demonstrated needs no mention.
we've never had kilt hoops, and we never will.

gird your shorts and show up tomorrow for a kilt-free hoops experience
(just all the rest). they may take your kilt, but they will never
take your freedom.

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

more locks

i got some more locks for the cage. you won't believe how secure this
is now. in fact, i'm thinking about renting out some space inside the
cage in the same fashion as a safety deposit box. if you are
interesting, bring your valuables and some cash tomorrow morning.
we'll be starting a bit earlier due to the special events tomorrow.
be there by 5:50a to get the show on the road.

laters!

Thursday, March 26, 2009

tired week

i don't know about anyone else, but this week has been a tired one for
me. judging from the way everyone drug in at the last minute on
wednesday, i would imagine you guys are feeling it too. so, in order
to make sure i am ready for better things tomorrow, i'm going to get
to bed at a decent hour and get plenty of sleep to make sure i am at
my best for the all important basketball games on friday.

remember: the gym is open usually around 5:45a for those who wish to warm up.

Tuesday, March 24, 2009

speedo

after monday, i think it's necessary to no longer allow jeff to
nickname people. show up tomorrow for all the great action you enjoy
and make sure you're properly clothed. we aren't gonna have any of
that here.

by the way, bryce has you all beat on the getting to the gym first.
he's so early that we might have to give him a set of keys so he can
open for me.

Sunday, March 22, 2009

discovery

can you really find out more about yourself than you already know? are there new heights to rise to than you've currently reached?

who knows? coming play hoops tomorrow morning probably won't help you realize any of this, but at least you'll have fun!

see you in the morning!

Thursday, March 19, 2009

last break

this is your last spring break basketball morning. but don't get
sucked into the five overtime college games that will steal your sleep
and make you miss the important first-hand hoops that you know and
love. if you tivo earlier in the evening than you normally go to bed,
you can earlier in the morning and watch the remainder of that game
before you have to have it spoiled by all the other guys at hoops.
awesome, right?

i'll see you at the normal hoops time!

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

irish activities

your late night irish party activities will not be counted as valid
excuses for missing basketball tomorrow. but you don't have to wear
green tomorrow...unless you just really want to. just know that we
all feel the pain of it not easy being green.

see you tomorrow morning.

Sunday, March 15, 2009

no break here

despite what the kids might be doing differently tomorrow morning at
5:55a, we are keeping the same schedule and playing some basketball.
no slackin' this week. and you can't use "march madness" as an excuse
either. that's what tivos are for.

see you all then!

Thursday, March 12, 2009

back in the groove

i don't know about you guys, but i'm back in the basketball groove. i
think we all felt the effects of both hour loss and missing monday
morning hoops on our wednesday games. i'm glad to have the exercise
back.

we continue tomorrow morning. come play!

Tuesday, March 10, 2009

metabolism back

i don't know about the rest of you guys, but i definitely need to get
my metabolism back up to the normal level it runs at on an average
week. the time change complicated the matter even more than simply
missing a day.

so, tomorrow morning, we are back in business! show up early to get
some stretching and warm up in, and then we'll jump start our systems.

Sunday, March 8, 2009

no hoops!

remember: no hoops on monday. come play wednesday instead.

Thursday, March 5, 2009

play your heart out

since we are not playing next monday, tomorrow is a great opportunity
to come and play your heart out, throw yourself into the game, give it
your all no matter what.

all your favorite people will be there: big daddy dave, pirate dave
(arggg), d-assassin, jeff "scott shot" scott, trent "i'm really not
hurt" eidemiller, neal "early guy" arwood, the gene machine, and
possibly one kidney bill (1kb). you'll want to be a part of this
exciting friday. who knows? maybe the missing nigerian will make an
appearance. we'll keep that hope alive.

you know the drill. see you there!

update: come a little early tomorrow morning to help move a few things off the floor. we will not need to reset it afterwards.

-- westparkhoops.com --

Tuesday, March 3, 2009

wake up!

and come play some hoops tomorrow morning!

or else!

Sunday, March 1, 2009

march madness begins

our very own march madness begins tomorrow for some basketball. a
full month of madness is just what we need, wouldn't you say?

come early for the best parking spaces. dennis was smirking as he
watched neal enter the gym after him. so for those of you who had
money on neal, sorry.

tomorrow is a senior luncheon set up day, so come early and get the
games in so we can reset at the end.

oh, and just note the calendar at www.westparkhoops.com. next monday
is an off day.

Thursday, February 26, 2009

feb final

i was going to say it was the feb final four-on-four, but i was afraid
of how that might influence attendance tomorrow morning. and with our
crowd, it could be influenced either way. so, i'll just leave the
subject as feb final since it's the last hoops day in february 2009.

two months down. ten more to go!

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

dennis vs. neal

we had a good eight on monday, quite the contrast to the fourteen the
previous two hoops mornings. among those eight was neither dennis nor
neal, the two early birds.

since both should be back by tomorrow, i renew the question from
before: who will be first to arrive? who will come the earliest?
it's been close some mornings.

it's on!

Sunday, February 22, 2009

high numbers

we've all been surprised/impressed at the many who have shown up in
the past week. i wish i could track this stuff, but i feel there
would be no scientific conclusion to use a prediction. i'm also
fairly certain it was not my email that prompted these numbers. but
it's good to have lots rather than and unbalanced seven.

of course, the question i really face tomorrow morning is: "will neal
beat dennis or will dennis get to the gym first?"

Thursday, February 19, 2009

keep your plans

we had a full crew complement on wednesday, double that of last week.
i know that friday will be something totally different than what i'd
expect. with sickness and cold weather and injuries and apples, we
may or may not have as many as fourteen show up. don't get confused
by all this though. keep your plans. if you were going to come and
play, be there. we will spread the fun around.

and we'll if dennis gets there before neal or if neal's alarm clock
works this time.

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

low numbers wednesday

if tomorrow is like all the other wednesdays, there should be the
typical seven who show. those seven men look and long for, yea, even
pray for an eighth man to bring balance to the court.

will you be the one? the chosen one who will bring balance to the court?

Sunday, February 15, 2009

back to hoops

it's the middle of february already. another monday. another start of a week.

and another day for hoops.

Thursday, February 12, 2009

friday the 13th

if you thought the day was scary enough, bring your black cat and play
some roundball. make sure walk under the ladder as you open your
unbrella just inside the gym welcome center. some unlucky team will
come out being total losers.

it seems that trent is more back to normal than he leads on. his
doctor will be pleased...or annoyed. we'll see.

and we're still missing the missing nigerian. (justin, where are you?)

oh, neal, remember to ask me how my dog situation played out. i think
you'll find it interesting.

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

replacements

we'll need a few replacement men as some are not going to be there
tomorrow. bring a friend or call a veteran. we just need ten.

mr. don? drew?

Sunday, February 8, 2009

yeah, baby!

welcome to spring (-like weather). the coldness has gone, and your joints you should no longer ache.

kick off the early spring season with your favorite sport.

-- westparkhoops.com --

Thursday, February 5, 2009

clear skies

friday's weather boasts of a heat wave, relatively speaking. so,
there should be no hindrances to making it out for the final day of
hoops this week.

the late ronald reagan's birthday was february 6. how about you come
win one for the gipper?

-= westparkhoops.com =-

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

how many will snow up?

i figure there won't really be any snow in the morning.

it should be just very cold.

so, i'll see you guys there, yo.

Sunday, February 1, 2009

setup monday

hey, posse!

come a bit earlier tomorrow to help unset the gym for some hoops and
plan for a reset after.

i assume there will be people in the morning? superbowl won't interfere, right?

Thursday, January 29, 2009

superbowl, schmooperbowl

bah! forget oblong "balls" and helments and protective gear. real men play games where the ball is round and orange, and no pads or protection is regulation.

don't watch when you can participate. hoops for life! bring the noise tomorrow morning.

:: westparkhoops.com ::

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

tyok

we'll be playing basketball like we always do on wednesday mornings.
we'll split up like we always do. and we'll have the same fun.

don't forget: when you leave this time, tyok (take your own keys)!

Sunday, January 25, 2009

come early

greetings! we'll be back at the old game of round ball tomorrow morning.
come early for some warm up time so that your game is all that.

early?

despite the threats...

....of snow this week, we'll still be running strong.  which brings me to a point:  how do we determine snow events preventing hoops?  do they usually close school as early as 5:30a?  do we still want to come if there is no school?  i need your feedback.  technically, i could always literally run to the church (but it would take less than my normal 2.73 minutes).

we should be good tonight.  see you all then!

just showing up

after two days of horrible performance hoops, i've lowered my expectations to being happy to just show up.

who's with me?  tomorrow?  555?

hopefully better than monday

anyone else want a do-over from monday's games? although i was exercised well, my performance was poor. i am looking forward to a second chance tomorrow.

whoever wants to join me, meet at 5:55a center court.
