i was surprised to see how many guys said they would be back to playing tomorrow morning, right after christmas, but we will be playing tomorrow at the same time. i plan to see you guys there in the morning.

we have not enough committed for christmas eve, so sleep in that morning as you with young kids won't be doing that tuesday morning.

we will meet back at the regular time on wednesday morning to work off the christmas goodies. friday the same.

friday and monday

we play tomorrow morning just like usual, except it's still recovering from last week's turkey feast. another day to recover from that.

it looks as though trent has made it possible to play on monday volunteering his services to come early to tear down and set up afterwards. i had a couple of people volunteer to help with that tear down before hoops, but i would encourage anyone who can to also come give a hand as the rule of many hands applies. i understand if you cannot, so don't stress too much about it.

i open the gym at 5:30a on hoops days. for monday, though, i will try to get there a bit earlier, say 5:15a, to open it up. set your alarms accordingly.

i know you guys probably didn't show up on monday, but i wanted to remind you to enjoy your week off and wish you happy overeating day on thursday.

we are not playing tomorrow or friday, so you'll have to deal with your own stuffing in other ways. or we'll just see how sluggish we all are on monday.

i know trent misses you guys. he's probably cried himself to sleep already one night knowing we wouldn't meet in the morning. if anyone else feels the same way, take comfort from the knowledge that we resume hoops monday, novemeber 26.

happy days

as we approach the middle of november, numbers are good, and that means a happy trent. but who are really kidding? we're all happy with these numbers. of course, we're happy that trent's happy. all we're missing is the fonz.

starting early

the past week or so has been a good start to getting me in shape for some delicious turkey in a few weeks. with all the running, i should be prepped for downing some juicy bird meat and stuffing. if we have eight tomorrow, we will still be on track.

by the way, i would encourage you to reference trent's optimal hoops match up math email from a few weeks ago so that we can squash the 4-on-5 teams we've been having.

seems a few more guys are suffering from TLBS. on monday, dave "the dove" took the bench voluntarily as he was suffering from the condition. many things could be attributed as the cause for TLBS. in dave's case, it's probably his extremely active playing style catching up with him. for me, i've had my own case of it, the result of not being fully rested and not using my abs enough. in trent's case, it's from lifting hot water heaters and cars.

be careful out there and protect yourself from TLBS. if you suffer from it, get plenty of rest and come back strong. see you tomorrow!

not sure

i don't know exactly how trent feels about the numbers right now. on one hand, he got in some righteous games on wednesday, totally testing his physical limits. on the other hand, 3-on-3 wasn't as fun as 4-on-4 or 5-on-5. it's hard to tell if he's happy or not. perhaps he can weigh in on this email and give us clue. either way, it'd be a good idea for your sake to show up tomorrow morning.

UPDATE: several regulars are going to the men's retreat this weekend and are probably already there. so, call it out if you ARE attending tomorrow morning. i will repost before 10:00p tonight whether enough interest warrants waking up early.

hopefully, not as steadily as they seem to have been coming. cary is probably still suffering from TLBS (trent lower back syndrome). i know that pain. dave hopefully has been able to eat normally after a throat shot. have you guys notices that mike ends up on the floor on his back right under the goal a lot? good thing he's not a turtle. and rob...well, he didn't really get hurt. but we are all guys, right? we can take it, shake it off, and step back on the court ready for the next game because that's how we roll.

it seems to me that the current mix of fellows playing in the mornings these days has altered the dynamic of play enough to really bring out more activity in all of us...except rob.  just kidding.  he's been moving just as quickly.  i know because i've guarded him and felt his presence.  formidable, to say the least.

monday was another clash of matched teams! all games were epic! those were the games for which songs will be written. late at night long after work when you are sitting around the fire having eaten meat cooked fresh from the hunt and your son asks you tell him a tale, it will be those moments you will expound to him. he will listen in awe and dream of one day being able to play some hoops as epic as that. these stories will become the lore of his family, of his people. and when other children ask him what his father does, he will tell them the stories of epic basketball!

monday might be gone, but the days of epic basketball are not. perhaps wednesday will be another such day. be a part of the lore. be a part of epic legend!

summer ready

we've past the halfway point of may.  school will be out soon, and summer vacations will be...being taken.  and if any of those summer vacations take you to a beach, then i would suggest coming to hoops the next five weeks before july so that you can get that body of yours in shape.  (i say five weeks because we are off a week in june.  see the calendar at for which week that is.)

it can be done.  in fact, a couple of guys in our group have been on the hoops weight loss program and have had some significant results.  all it takes is an hour three days a week, an hour of more fun than a normal workout or pilates class.

i know you might be wondering if we are playing tomorrow.  it's good friday.  some of you have it off.  some don't.  i don't get it off normally, but i am taking tomorrow off, not because it's good friday.  and even if i'm taking it off, i'll still be there with game skillz.  if i can sleep all the way through the night without interruptions, i'll be all up in your face...if you are on not my team...and if you are guarding me.

whether or not you work the day, hoops is still an important part of it.

final countdown

it's the last day for about ten that you'll be able to play.  they are working the ceiling over spring break, and that all starts on friday.  the clocks have started and 5:40a comes early tomorrow.  plan on getting in some serious aerobics tomorrow.  i know i am (with BOTH my lungs).

after tomorrow, we'll resume play on march 26.  i know, that is a long time away.  but there is still time for tomorrow.  the final countdown!

spring break is coming up quickly!  we only have a few days left to play before we have a week off.  in fact, it's a little more than a week off.  if you haven't already, sync up the hoops google calender with your google calendar.  you find that here on the right (see it?).  you'll notice which days we're playing and which ones we don't.

now is the time to get your exercise in before the gap.  don't let the opportunity for exercise pass you by.  operators are standing by.  the call is free!  so, what have you got to lose?

back to work

we are back to hoops tomorrow morning, but there's a slight catch: we might need to clear the gym floor to play.  that means one of two things:  either we get there earlier than we normally have and clear it, or we sacrifice play time by clearing when everyone arrive at 6:05a.  as always, gym will be open by 5:40a.

you don't have to respond either way.  we do what we have to when the crew arrives.

just found out the gym will not be available for hoops tomorrow morning.  official missions conference business.  so, we'll reconvene on monday morning with a new appreciation for the spot we have to play.

i used to think the email notices would jinx the numbers.  then when there was no email, we had some lower numbers.  now, i'm not convinced the email was the problem.  but whatever it was that has caused this slump. you can get over that by showing up tomorrow.  the rest of us there who are still showing up will appreciate it.

bring spares

as you might remember, we were missing our ball cage on monday.  i don't know if anything has changed, but it is still a good idea to bring a basketball if you have one.  just toss it in your vehicle and have it ready for tomorrow morning.  plus, it'll be ready in case you end up in some stand off on the street and it all comes down to a basketball show down.  for those times, it's best to be ready with your own round ball.  you'd look like a punk if you had to borrow one.  be prepared is the lesson here.

more for your money

cary mentioned that i hadn't been providing enough in the emails.  so, in order to make sure you are all getting your money's worth, here is an email with plenty of words to ensure that it's right.  i think you all are quality people who want to get the best investments.  that's why this email will make you all happy.  it full of words.  lots of words.  they make sense too.  not just random ipsum generators.  who wants that anyway?  and who reads latin?  and who would read random latin?  i know the language is dead, but how about a latin generator which could string words into phrases that actually make sense.  don't they have those for types of engines for spam email content?  not in latin, because let's face it, the...latins...didn't have email way back when.  if they did, this ipsum stuff might be considered a joke among them.  but seriously, if our random word generators were less random and more constructive, perhaps they might be smart enough to have conversations via email.  and if it could understand a reply and then generate another reply, it might continue to increase its learning to one day become self-aware.  then we have that whole terminator scenario on our hands.  yikes to that!   since we can predict that outcome with this type of discussion and know from movies how that would end, we can put a stop to it by just not wasting any time programming coherent word generators and just come play some hoops tomorrow morning instead.

week 1, day 3

dunno about the rest of you, but i've found it strange to keep track of what day it is this week.  factor in a short week since monday was time off and then the previous weeks off for vacation, and the days just don't seem like themselves.  but thanks to all of you who have kept the numbers good over the holidays.  attendance is unpredictable and can be chaotic.  and i believe i'm starting to see a dent in working off the christmas snacks.  so, it's all looking good.

i'll be glad tomorrow is friday.  you will be too.  see you dark and early.

some people think bill is very competitive.  but that's not true.  he's very mild mannered, relaxed, indifferent to scores and challenges.

but you might ask, "why does he get hurt so much?  is he in the wrong place at the wrong time?"  no, that's not it either.  the real answer is magnetism.  he is a magnet for pain.  more specifically, his face is a magnet for elbows.   it's a strong attraction.  no matter where he is, elbows fly toward his face.  it happens so often the official term for his injuries is "elblows."

but he recovers well.  he's dabs his face on his t-shirt and keeps going.  nothing can stop him.  nothing's gonna stop him now.

2012.  the end of civilization as we know it.  or as the mayans knew it.  of course, their civilization died out so long ago that they snuck out of the end of the world party like a bunch of cowards.  sheez, couldn't even wait around to see if their predictions would live up or if they jumped to conclusions over a faulty counting system.

i know they gave up too soon, but we're just getting started.  come start your new year in a happy way by playing basketball. you might feel like the mayans when we're done, but isn't that why we play?
